Broken pipes in Freezing Temperatures

It is easy for us to forget how devastating water damage can be. And many do not realize how much damage can be done from a single supply pipe that has a break.
This can be the flex lines we all se eat the toilets and under our sinks and the cooper or PEX lines we all have in our homes. In regards to the flex lines they should be replaced every 5-7 years to prevent a break. Remember these lines are under constant pressure and wear and break down over time. The worst part is they wear from the inside out so likely you have no idea there is a issue until it is too late. And it always seems to happen just as you are leaving for an amazing vacation or going to see family for a extended weekend.
Here are a few tips to protect your home.
- First is to make sure the flex lines are all under 7 years old and if you don't know how old it is you should have them replaced. During this process make sure all of the shut off valves work. there is nothing worse than turning the valve to stop the water and it no longer works then all you can do is shut off the main if it works or wait for the plumber to get there and that is a helpless feeling.
- In addition when you are going to be away for a extended period of time turn off the water to the home at the main. That way there can be no issues to ruin your vacation.
- There are also multiple water monitors that can be placed on the floor to send you notification that they have sensed water. The key to all of this is maintenance and thinking ahead.
